Krenit Bowls and Finn Juhl Tray (Denmark), 1950’s

Some time ago I promised Sean to post a picture of my two Krenit bowls, and here they are! They are named after Herbert Krenchel (1922-2014), an engineer who invented the black material (‘krenit’) the bowls are made of (matte, sand-blown enamel), patented in 1954. On the inside, krenit items are decorated with colourful enamel, here red. The bowls are hugely popular and quite expensive nowadays.

To display them I used another wonderful 1950’s design object, a reversible tray by Finn Juhl (1912-1989), probably more famous as a furniture designer. The tray was designed in 1956. It is made of teak and red on one side and black on the other (it was also made in other colour combinations). Both the bowl and the tray have been relaunched in recent years, but things shown here are all original!

Measurements: tray – 48 x 30 cm (19 x 12 in). Large bowl: 25 x 14.5 cm (10 x 5.5 in). Small bowl: 12.5 x 5.5 cm (5 x 2.2 in). On the third picture the mark on the bowl – ‘K’ , KRENIT' and ‘DENMARK’.
