    Not only did it hold a pen and pencil there is a place for a small notepad. Now I just need to find a vintage note pad. The pen or pencil (most likely a pencil) fit on either side and the pad in the compartment in the center. It is designed to be fixed to the wall and the wall would become the back of the compartment for the writing pad.
    As usual with graniteware it is difficult to find a precise. Will go 1920 plus are minus 20 years.
