I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THIS POST CARD. THIS CAME IN THE BOX LOT FROM ESTATE. IT APPEARS TO BE REAL OLD. ANY HELP ABOUT THE STATUE OR MONUMENT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. ALSO I BELEIVE THE ARTIST WAS A. DE LOTTO????

The Italian inscription to the rear, reads: "Bronze statue for the monument of the dead, in the Commune of Longarone".
This memorial no longer exists, and the reason why??

"On October 9, 1963, at 10:39pm 260 million cubic metres of rock broke off from the top of Monte Toc, on the border between Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia. It fell into the reservoir of the Vajont Dam, producing an enormous wave of at least 50 million cubic metres of water. The dam, completed in 1959 and one of the biggest in the world at the time, did not suffer any serious damage. However, flooding destroyed several villages in the valley and killed almost 2,000 people. A third of the population of Longarone, the largest village downstream of the dam, perished." I think it actually survived the 'onda della morte' of 1963. It's a memorial to the fallen of the 1915-1918 war. Well worn.

Ok, did not search long enough, or diligently enough.
Name of the Commune rang a bell for the disaster, and just assumed, (terrible sin) that the monument had perished in 1963.

The disaster claimed another life several months later. The architect, realising he was responsible, commited suicide prior to a judicial inquiry.
It's an amazing story .... M. I had never heard of this until you discovered the story of the tragic events in Longarone. I went looking for photos and saw the pic. above.
I just found out about the statue itself ..... the artist was Annibale de Lotto (San Vito di Cadore 1877 - Venezia 1932). The bronze was called 'la Vittoria' and dates to 1923.
It seems the waters damaged the statue and the base .... you can see soldiers here after the incident replacing the base:

It is a miracle that people survived this disaster, but like others, these man-made disasters, with hindsight, could have been avoided, just like Aberfan.

I actually now remember that Dario Fo had mentioned this incident of 1963 in his play 'La Morte Accidentale Di un Anarchico'. The play has delighted me for for the last forty years. Because of this posting I have learnt details that have eluded me for all those years.

Athena was a goddess of war. That card is a depiction of Athena, as the chryselaphantine of gold and ivory was lost in ancient times.
