My grandfather a soldier of WW1 enlisted in 1917. He was first sent to Camp Hancock, GA and was assigned to the 1st Casualty Co. 1st Provisional Regiment of the Ordnance Corps. He was later sent to France and fought at the battle of Cantigny. My grandfather was discharged on Jan 31, 1919 reason given "Service no longer required" I was given his uniform by my mother along with his Honorable Discharge. On his discharge is stamped medal delivered. My grandfather passed away in 1968. I wanted to ask Scottvez what are the two chevrons strips pointing down and the star stand for?

The stripes on the sleeve near the bottom are "overseas chevrons". Each stripe represents 6 months of service overseas. Soldiers who served less than 6 months were authorized to wear a blue chevron.

The star is BELIEVED to be representative of "Early Enlistment" or "AEF First Overseas". It is NOT an authorized insignia and there is no known official documentation on the device.
