I would classify this as a "Bride's Trunk" == which really means a high quality top of the line trunk. The leather covering and bold hardware plus a detailed interior speaks of high quality. without a label from a maker though it may be hard to know which company made it -- unless someone can clearly identify the hardware as exclusive to this trunk and maker. Looks to me to be made around the 1880's. As to original owner -- well that could be anybody's guess without provenance. Sometimes the owners initials are stenciled on the side but I do not see that in this case. All in all a great trunk and worthy of restoration if you are so inclined.
I don't know anything about it, other than it is beautiful! I like the vertical slats on the ends, I don't think I have ever seen that before.
thank you both so much !!!!!
If you are looking for a way to make it look better and preserve it how it is I would recommend three things. I would gun oil all of the tin... will shine it up a bit. I would mink oil all of the leather -- but it will darken the leather significantly fyi -- also be careful with application because it looks like the leather is rather fragile -- if it is too fragile try a leather protector in a spray. I would then apply tung oil on all the wood slats. These things will improve the look of your trunk without having to do major restoration... ie sanding and buffing out the tin and metal hardware. Hope this helps...
Too cool, follow T-mans advice and post some more pics.
