The Drugmart plaza of our local Goodwill is getting a complete remodel so I've been steering clear over the last few months. It's shedding it's tired 50's-60's image and will look fresh and new when it's done. The GW's interior is pretty much done, so I decide to stop in and found this little piece of studio art glass. An interesting combination of techniques are used on this piece. Once again a signed piece so I figured it was worth the two dollar investment. It's signed Ed Francis on the bottom and dated 1993. His website is called "offcenterglass.com" and has a bit of info about his work and the classes he teaches. There are links to a several galleries that sell his pieces on the site as well.
From offcenterglass.com :
I took over the glassblowing program at Tidewater Community College in 2005 in Portsmouth, Virginia. The college's Art Center has a full range of art classes and two year degrees including glassblowing. I have added programming and built the studio to accomodate all types of glassworking, blowing, casting and cold work.
I previously designed and built the program at the The Indianapolis Art Center. IAC offers many classes in glassblowing in a state of the art facility. Try a sampler, a two hour introduction to the glass studio or sign up for a 7, 10 or 15 week course and learn everything there is to know about glassblowing. Rental time is also available in this shop. Check with the IAC for details and changes.
I also do roving programs. I built a portable glass furnace so that I can do demonstrations on the road. I do programs for small groups to multi day events for larger groups - either demonstrations or "make a paperweight" programs. Contact me for details. I also offer private instruction by arrangement.
I would love to give you the glassworking experience!
Off Center Glass specializes in mouthblown glass lighting, blown and cast custom awards and gift ware.
Also home of Ed Francis Glass Sculpture. Ed designs, constructs and installs commissioned public art in glass and steel.
Ed Francis has over 25 years of experience as a glass blower, teacher, artist and studio designer and builder.
Sweet Find ~ As always MIKE
stunning!!
Thanks so much Rose :)...... Sean, I also saw your bottle that you posted two years ago. It came up while I was researching this piece. What a coincidence !
Really like this Mike.
Laughed at the drugmart.....we have those areas too and the dear ladies in the op shops seem such a contrast to the outside!
Thanks Karen :)
Love the colours in this!!..:-)
Thanks Inky :).... the azure and lapis blues are really beautiful.
And only $2.00 Mike??!! Great find!
Thanks Rick :) .... It's very hard to see the etched signatures without magnification and the right light. So I'm sure they escape detection by the production staff and dismiss these pieces as junk glass. I always carry my little 10x's magnifier with me for glass and jewelry.
Lucky you then, and great idea with the magnifying glass!
