this appears to be a very old brass button affixed to a 7 1/2" steel needle similar to other needles with black globular glass heads.
The buton has an early(Victorian?) crown atop with a crowned standing Lion to the left and a chained Unicorn to the right on either side of a garter? crest bearing the words

    17 quinal
    ox zin

    ok on drot
The center has 4 panes with diagonal squares containf 3 animal shapes
and the opposite diagonal containing unknown upper right and possibly a harp lower left.
The button is brass of 15/16" diameter with a front shell folder over rear plate. TRhe rear plate carries "plailr bro - birmingham.

This is a Late Victorian era British Army General Service Button, as worn by most enlisted soldiers.
