This gorgeous fan has seen better days. I got it a few years ago to dress an art deco bedroom and have flapped it around a bit as fun. Recently though I have wondered if I am not mistreating it as there are a few things about it which make me think it should be treated with more respect and even renovated. My husband stuck a hot pin in it and there was no hole or smell so we think that may mean it is bone or ivory. It seems to me to be as follows but I would really love to find out a bit more about what it may be if anyone can shed more light for me :-) It has gained some more admiration from me in recent months! It looks like silk with patterns that are raised on the surface, some hand-painted in colours on the silk and onto the hard bits. The hanging loop is held on with pretty shiny maybe shell or mother of pearl-type material. There are feather trims on the side to be seen, although the rear side looks like it also has silk on it. Inside the silk seems to be thick paper on each side, so there are several layers to the fan construction.
65 cm from tip to tip of the fabric parts when opened. 35cm long. The feathers are extra to these measurements.
Any ideas as to age, country and original intended owner? I wonder if it would have been for costume/stage or for a real person to use??
