This Baccarat vase is one of the heaviest I own; it stands 10" tall and the opaline glass is very thick, with a finely ground large pontil on the base. There are the faint traces of a red numeral on the pontil, as well. This particular vase shape was used quite a bit by Baccarat. The vase depicts a Japonisme theme of a swallow flying over a scene of blue willows depicted in the classic Japanese style. Interestingly, this vase was attributed by a well-known Asian art appraiser as Japanese, from the Meiji period (September 8, 1868 through July 30, 1912); it most probably dates to about 1880.

This is just exquisite Michelle. I could look ta it for hours.

Interestingly, Baccarat is a huge seller of glass in Japan today. The Japanese have a real love of it.

I wish I took photos in th Baccarat Museum when I was rhere . Think was not allowed . I don't remember this type but so remember being blown away by the variety and that they did so many things that one would swear were by some other maker

I think the colour palette is very French, rather sombre, as are some of the other examples you have shown. However not at all dull....lovely in fact!

racer4racer, thank you. I had no idea that Baccarat was so popular in Japan - what an interesting change in styles and preference over the years!

Marty, is the Baccarat museum in France? (I am guessing it is!) I would love to go someday; we have a trip to Paris planned for the summer of 2016, so maybe it will be a possibility! :)

Thank you, Sklo. I hadn't really thought of the colors that way until you mentioned it, but you are right. I love earth tones, and I guess these speak to me somehow.
