Had this in our family for about 45 years that I can remember, its top can not be opened (almost as if its welded closed) hence the chip where a member of the family has tried to open it! I have been over it with a powerful magnifying eyepiece and there appears to be no marks at all that I can see, it also appears to be Amber glass at first, but when a torch is shone through it, it is actually clear and grey/dark where the embossed part is, whatever is inside is actually amber and the vessel is really quite full, the contents are crystalised and there is also and amount of liquid in there. Any info would be appreciated, dying to know what may be in there, and what the aroma could be like.

I think it has a glass stopper and the stopper is likely stuck real good. This is a common problem with old glass bottles that have sat unopened for a long time. Here's some tips on releasing the stopper:

Thanks SEAN68, and than you Kydur for those links, fingers crossed, hope it is something pleasant, knowing my luck it will be something like concentrated chloroform and I will be offline for a while!

Or maybe it's a funerary jar containing bodily fluids that were being analyzed during the 1918 Flu Pandemic (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1918_flu_pandemic).

Nah... open it up, what's the worst that could happen?!
