As a child I grew up with the knowledge of the Pendle Witches. I lived not far away.
Every Halloween we used to go up to Pendle Hill with torches and there was a lot of hussle and bushel, it was great being around several thousands of people from the local area and farther afield.
Apparently this doesn't happen anymore, why I don't know, shame really, because it is part of our history.
Now people dress up and they spend their cash, which is fair enough, but it's not what I consider Halloween is.
I Shall put a link in my comments. This story really is very sad. The Pendle witches were in my opinion never ever Witches, but they paid with their lives, abused, tortoured then hanged at Lancaster Castle.
To me Halloween is not a Ocassion to be celebrated, but that is probably because I know about the Pendle Witches.
Also Pendle Hill has a very big connection to the Quaker Society. I have put a link farther down in my comments, about George Fox and the Quaker movement. It's interesting that you have the so called bad Pendle Witches and the so called good which were the Religious Quakers. Pendle Hill is apparently on a ley line. Ever since I can remember there as always been UFO activity, I've never seen any myself.
I could have posted a separate posting, but I think that it is relevant that they are together.
Many thanks for looking

Fascinating and sad Jean. Thank you.
Researched it even more & was fascinated! Incredible what humans do to each other under the guise of religion & current beliefs.
This is truly a sad event that this took place in history. But, I too am fascinated by the story. I had no knowledge of this. Thank you for sharing this with us.
I couldnt agree more with your sentiment.
Theyve tried to bring the American version of it here, with children dressing up running from house to house doing trick or treat. I wouldnt et my children do it now nor my grandchildren. But when you look at the true meaning which I think comes from England then why would you celebrate the sad event.... I'm happy to celebrate the innocent ppl who were killed but not the activty. And they teach children to run around and be scared of the witches for heavens sake....

Pendle Hill also has a big connection with the founding of the Quaker Society.
Thank you, racer, blunderbuss, jscotto and AnneLanders for your interest and comments. I suppose because I lived in this area and it was common knowledge to me, you don't take notice. It's only when you move away you begin to appreciate your local history. When you think these Witch Trails were many years ahead of the Salem Witch Trails which are the more famous. Yes blunderbuss Religion had a hand in all these Witch Trials and AnneLanders my kids when they were Young lived Nairobi so didn't get Halloween down their throats. But even in Kenya to this day, if you are accused of beening a witch, thing could fatal for you.
Many thanks
