This mantel clock was purchased in Petaluma , CA from an antique store in the early 1970's.
It is black marble or onyx slab and carved with vine design. It has a round pillar of marbled stone on each side and insets of the same stone inset into 4 more places.
The clock face is ivory in color, hands appear to be brass, and also the center of the face and trim look to be brass. The back panel is a brass 5 inch circle with a cut out spoke design.
On the bottom of the clock there are the only designations of its origin. R.S is scratched into the wood surrounding the stone inside and 1551 looks to also be scratched in.

This clock has been fun to research but I have not found the same clock with the same stone as this one appears to have. I thought at first it was iron because it is very heavy. But more closely examined it is made of slabs of a very solid shiny stone that has conchoidal fracture, so I guessed onyx. There is a small chip out on the bottom front right corner of the clock. Also I don't know the name of the inset and pillar stone. Some kind of marble is my guess, darker than Italian.

Any stamp or marks on the movement?
