I'm not sure who these two boys are, but they are ancestors on my father's side. The intaglio writing in the lower corner states: Whites Keene N.H. Is this an ambrotype?

What a great photo! So, about how old would this be? Just curious.

      Not an ambrotype.

An ambrotype is an image on glass-- usually found in a small wood or thermoplastic case with copper frame and matting.

Your image is a late cabinet card. I would think it dates from the 1890s.

thank you Scott! it's the late 1880s, i'm pretty sure.

      Glad to help.

The style of mount is much more typical of the 1890s and slightly past the turn of the century.

Here is an example of the matting you will usually find around an ambrotype:

Outside of the brass matting and keeper-- it will appear as a sheet of glass. The glass plate is back with black material (or made on ruby colored glass), which makes the image show. Because the glass plate is somewhat fragile-- they are most often found in cases.

one of my earliest memories is watching my pepere tossing boxes of these big glass plate photos into a garbage can. i thought the were daguerrotypes, but i guess they could have been ambrotypes as well.
    9. scottvez scottvez, 9 years ago
Three types of photos were typically housed in the cases: daguerreotypes, ambrotypes and tintypes. Dags have a silver/ heavily mirrored surface and really stand out from the other two. The appearance of ambrotypes and tintypes are very similar. Ambrotypes are on glass and tintypes are on a sheet of iron. Often ambrotypes and tintypes have to be taken out of the case to make a determination.

Oh-- sad about the garbage dump of the images. I hear stories like that all too often. Years ago, the old photos were looked at as garbage by many people-- it is only my knowledge of CURRENT desirability and values that makes me cringe when I hear those stories!
