Ever since I got interested in vintage jewellery I hoped to score a decent demantoid garnet.
This has been on one of my watch lists for most of that time, and I've corresponded with the seller several times trying to get the price near to something I was prepared to pay.
Finally! They needed some cash for a family occasion, so here it is in my hot little hands.
This is a 1.6ct (estimated) 6.95 x 6.2 x 4.55mm demantoid garnet surrounded by twelve 2.5pt single cut diamonds, set in an 18ct yellow and white gold ring.
The demantoid has a large horse's tail inclusion at about 3 o'clock so it is definitely a Urals stone. From the construction, cut of the diamonds, and use of white gold for the top, I'm guessing it dates to the 1920's, and due to the 18ct stamp, it was probably made in England.
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! (quote from Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky).
