Should I clean it or leave it as it is? I have only cleaned up the spot where the silver marks are found.

Looks like: .900 and WZ or ZW.

Nine inches long. Don't know what kind of wood it is, either. The shop manager thought it was wood and brass, so I only handed over $2.50.

Still have to try to research it. That should be interesting.

    Thanks for looking!

      Interesting!
When paperback books flooded the market, their pages were uncut, you needed this to cut the pages to continue your reading. Hence the name page turner.
I don't think 1845 is the date of yours, because then, books were hardcover.
Rather feel it around 1920 :-)
Need further investigations on the mark !

Hmmmm, the date 1845 is on both sides. I think it's a letter opener instead of a page turner. Page turners are thinner. I did a bit of research on letter openers and they were around in 1845. I have to see what else I can find.

katherine - I was very surprised to find it. I was snooping around on the counter in the shop and it was stuck inside a cup, which was inside a box. The wood has a lovely patina. I don't know what the date 1845 signifies, either. This might be a one-off, in which case I won't find anything on the net about it. Boo hoo!! :( :-)

It's enough to drive a normal person straight out of their tree. Luckily we collectors aren't easily driven, lol. ;)
