This came in a grouping that included the Phillips Academy baseball team.
This image depicts a famous Phillips graduate.
Richard T. Greener graduated from Phillips in 1865 and had this photograph taken, AUTOGRAPHED it, and exchanged it with another student. The tax stamp on the back clearly dates it to 1 JUL 1865.
Greener went on to become the FIRST African- American graduate of Harvard in 1870.
In 1874, he became the FIRST African- American Professor at the University of South Carolina and later served as Dean of the Howard University School of Law.

Fabulous image of a confident young man !!!
Thanks vetraio, Greener was definitely a ground breaker. If you have the time do an online search-- he really had a fascinating life.
He also served as a Diplomat to Russia during the Russo- Japanese War.

Shall do !!!
This was one of the better biographies I found:

The discovery of his documents a few years ago created controversy too !!!

But they went on display late last year :

I find my self looking at the back of vintage pictures for the stamps now before I look at the front of them ,...lol nice picture ...Scott
Yep vetraio-- a mountain of controversy surrounded the discovery, marketing and eventual sale of the collection!
Roy-- the tax stamps date images to the time period of 1 AUG 64- 31 JUL 66. They are a study in themselves. I have hundreds and would consider them to be generally misunderstood and under appreciated by many photo collectors.
