These nails are from the "United States Forest Service". The first nail is an aluminum Hubbard nail (unknown date but probably from the 30's or 40's and the Jury is still out on what they were used for) and the next 3 are steel nails and 2 of them are dated 1910 and 1911 . These are some of my favorites because they were not used in Utility poles or Railroad ties, they were driven into trees that were selected to be harvested. The Loggers would pull the nail from the tree....harvest it....and then they would drive the nail into the stump to verify the tree was selected for harvesting. So next time you are hiking in a National Park and see a stump, take a minute and check it for a Nail!
