This is 3 x 3 inch Italian gilded enamel compact, probably made during the 1940-50s, these types of compacts that I have seen are usually made in Florence. There is a makers mark and a hallmark in the bottom on the front left side, it sometimes takes a while to find these marks, I tried to take a shot but it came out blurry.
The hand painted miniature is of a mother and daughter rendition of the 1781 by Jean Baptiste Hilaire work titled music. The mother is playing a guitar to her daughter. The mother and daughter are seated in a landscape surrounded by flowers, trees and a wicker basket of flowers and a dog in front of the pair.
The compact is docorated with vivid green enamelling resembling Malachite & at each side there is blue lapis coloured enamel.
The rest of the compact is engraved with foliate scrollwork in gold wash.
Inside there is still powder and a powder puff.
Many thanks for looking.

Another beauty in your growing collection, Jean !
Superb enamel and engraving work on your pièce :-)
Thank you SEAN, Manikin, jscotto, elesgirl, vetraio, racer and Kyra for leaving your lovely comments. Unfortunately I have no more compacts in this style, they are difficult to get hold off, you can get them from the States put they are quite expensive and with the tax on top of that, I can't see me buying anymore. But I'm happy with the two I have, maybe I might get lucky, fingers crossed.
Many thanks
