Possibly Egypt/Pre-Dynastic Nile Clay or maybe Marl as the piece has a light luster to it. Black top is a result of the firing process. 1" chip on base exposes red clay. About 14" in height.

I just wanted to add that my description is just my opinion. This piece came up to Boston from an auction in Florida and the sellers made no claims that it was authentic. As far as I know this piece has never been appraised or authenticated.
