I have mentioned before that Japanese glass design has been greatly influenced by their ceramic history and I think this vase really demonstrates that.
If you didn't know this was glass you could easily believe it to be a red glazed pottery vase with black and gold accents. The shape of the vessel and the finishing style are really quite traditional.
This vase is part of what I call Iwata's calligraphy series, a whole range of glass objects made with this calligraphic black and gold on a plain base.
However the other glass in this style is white, often pulegoso, and this is the only one I have seen in this rich red.
The red glass is not bubbled but is quite opaque and light barely shows through it.
It has been clear cased but the case is surprisingly thin for Iwata.
Height 28cm
I will note in comments the link to my other calligraphy vases.
