Hi what a wonderful old chest ! It appears homemade not factory . I believe the they used pieces of wood on hand and the back board was purchased at Shreveport lumber or was rescued from a board from there . It appears hand painted but done quite well . Maybe a Dads gift he made his child . Very cool .

What you have is an ammunition crate for 105 mm howitzer rounds-- the stamping on the bottom is the crate specifications.

Pretty typical for soldiers to take these type items home as they are sturdy/ useful boxes.

The painted decoration would make this a "trench art" piece!

I never would have guessed that in a million years.. Going to
      research that..

      Glad to help.

Do an online search for "105mm ammo crate" and you will see pictures that match your crate.

Nice to Know Scott I said it was not a factory Winnie pooh chest but to id box is cool . Would you consider it trench art if it was done years later after used ? As it seems the painting is much newer than crate ? Is anything brought home from service and made into something else trench art ?

I would call anything (decorative or utilitarian) made from war refuse (shells, crates, mess kits, etc...) TRENCH ART.

Who made the item and when/ where affects desirability and value, but doesn't determine if the item is trench art.
