This is a ninth plate ruby ambrotype and tells a powerful story.

It was very typical in the early photographic era to use images of the departed in mourning/ memorial poses.

I have many in my collection and several posted on CW, but this is the first case where the subject holds TWO images.

Clearly the one in the frame is a man (Father, would be a logical thought). The other image is not as clear but shows more hair (Mother, would be another logical thought).

While it cannot be proven, the two images displayed in this memorial manner would suggest that the photographer has captured a newly orphaned child.

The child's somewhat somber face reinforces the overall sad mood of the image.

Purchased at the Gettysburg Civil War Show in October-- a great show, if you have the opportunity to attend!

Thanks for looking cultcha. I doubt this was adoption related-- probably just something for the family.
