A friend found this stick in her late 1800s Brooklyn brownstone home. It's about 36" long, multi-sided, brass tips, burnished striping/marks, marked J. Pearce, Albany. Anyone know anything about it?

Since the meter is 39 3/8 inches, if this is shorter, then it must be in inches. Nice measuring stick.
May have been used for measuring home heating oil (tank).
That sounds reasonable FireVet. We don't need heating where I live & never used oil heaters, but understand a bit about them. So the tank would be approx. 3' in dia..
It is a lumbermans cane. It is used to calculate board feet on a load of lumber. I wish I knew how to use the scale on it. I have one that belonged to my great grandfather. If there are any sawyers out there that see this, a lesson on its use would be appreciated.
Thanks Hittmd. I haven't slept for 2 months trying to figure it out ! LOL!! Now I see it. Just a matter of perspective.
I found one this weekend like this one. It is a lumbermans cane. My grandfather use to use them in his lumber yard.
