I saw this pretty plate last year at a local antiques market and paid $1 for the privilege of taking it home. The diameter is 9 1/2 inches. The plate is on the light side, hand thrown. Not sure if the design is impressed or hand made. Image searches turned up nothing. A Google search of "Intaglio Terracotta Bird Plate" also gave me a zero. The terracotta that I can see on the back looks to be a pale color. I don't think it has any great age to it. I suspect it is a tourist piece.
Thanks for any info.
That is a gorgeous gorgeous plate, Bonnie! Are you sure it's handthrown, looks awfully perfect.
katherine - I can see what looks like many thin grooves on the back of the plate, like it was spun on a wheel.
Okay. Well, I've looked high and low, only saw one barely similar artist work, nothing close to the same. It's a wonderful dish, even if it is another mystery!
You did better than me - I didn't find anything at all. I've never seen an intaglio plate before...not like this one , anyway.
This is the one I found, besides a contemporary artist who did similar, but again not much like yours:

katherine - interesting. My plate has no name or initials or anything else to help ID it. The intaglio is quite deep and defined. I imagine it will remain a mystery until I find another and have sense enough to ask where it came from, lol!
Wow Katherine you are good at finding info!
Nice plate too Bonnie :)
I love the delicate look of your plate, and if it's any help I think the bird is a swallow.
Yes, a swallow, I searched high and low for a similar, there are lots of swallow patterns on production china, but none like this. But as Bonnie says, she or one of the Blind Squirrels will run across another one day! :)
