This beautiful pendant was in the display case at Salvation this morning and I had to take a closer look. It's heavy sterling silver and marked with an " A .925" on the tab that holds the onyx plaque in place. The front has elegant filigree set with marcasites that add just enough sparkle. There is a prong set Amethyst at the bottom with a freshwater pearl drop. It weights about 12 grams and the chain adds another 2 grams. I'm sure the chain is not original to the pendant. It's 15" to the bale but it just doesn't match the pendant. Too new looking . The links are a box style and the jump ring is marked Italy .925. Nice chain just not for this piece. I had my jeweler friend look at it and while all the materials are genuine his opinion was it wasn't as old as I had thought because the marcasites are glued instead of set. There's also almost no signs of wear so he figured after the 50's to the 80's. So all in all quite a nice find for the money even if it isn't an antique piece. -Mike-
I believe the chain is modern. The pendant is very pretty! Nice find!
Thanks Efes...yes I agree. Too shiny an the wrong type of link. Maybe I can find one that's more fitting eventually. but it still is a nice silver chain in it's own right.
It is lovely Mike. Well spotted!
Isn't though...I was rather broke today and my friend let me have it for the "fiver" I had left in my wallet. It was priced at three times that much. So happy !!
Thanks Ken :)
Great eye, mike, and great bargain! :)
Thanks Katherine :)..... judging from the comments I guess I did good and wasn't too far off the mark date wise. I will probably take it to the jeweler just to get his opinion about the stones.
Verdict in from the jeweler...lovely piece with a real Amethyst, Onyx, Freshwater Pearl drop. Marcasites are glued and not set, so his opinion is that it's not very old. Add to that almost no wear or missing stones, glued one's tend to fall out over time. So he's thinking 70's or 80's nice revival piece. A bit of a bummer it's not old but at least the Amethyst was real . :)
