katherines…

So I brought this vintage Japanese necklace home with me, thinking it was a nice bit of glass bead costume jewelry. I showed it to my local jeweler and he says he thinks these are actual stones. They are cold and heavy. What do the stone experts on here think? I hope you liked seeing this, and thanks for looking.
I bet this is one heavy necklace! It's pretty K. What I have found with jewelers is that you have to take your belongings to more than one jeweler to really get what you want to know. Three different opinions are good, then you come to your own conclusion. I know it's a pain to do that but honestly, I think it's the best way. And that goes for any type of jewelry.
If you can, try to see someone that knows about jade in your area. Sometimes the jewelers don't want to be "bothered" so don't bother with them. Good luck.
Looks like molded glass to me. I would think that if it was jade, it would not be strung on a costume jewelry quality "frame" so to speak. I also think you should get a second/third opinion. Ya never know!
Wow Kath, chunky necklace, love the green shades!
From the pics, agree with Efe, glass is a certitude for me.
Most "jewelers" are only retailers!
Glass or not - it is beautiful! And this is what counts, isn't it?

Share, thanks, good advice, and I agree, I found that two jewelers will give you differing opinions, so you need the third for the tie-breaker, lol. I don't think the stones are jade, although the dark round ones do seem different from the other which I am almost sure are molded glass. And yes, it is heavy! :)
Thanks, Bonnie, yes I agree, possibly some stone that's green but not jade. :)
Thanks, kyratango, for your expert opinion, glass it is, then!
Thanks, freiheit, yes I think the beauty of it is what counts, it's what I bought it for.
I am curious about the stringing, at first I thought the tops were corroded, but upon looking closer, it's some sort of green string, maybe silk.
Thanks for the love, nustsabotas6, and SEAN68. :)
Thanks, Ken, it is lovely, and I agree, hard to know for sure, even with holding. As I say, to me the necklace is cold and heavy, but they do look like glass to me, except for some of the dark green round ones. Mysterious! :)
It's really beautiful Katherine..I've heard of something called "Peking glass" on Antiques Roadshow maybe that's the ticket. :)
Thanks for the love, mikelv85, and Nicefice. :)
Mike, from what I've read, Peking glass is a sort of misapplied catch phrase for certain types of glass, it's possible this falls in that category. Thanks! :)
Thanks for the love, valentino97, and Chi-Treasures. :)
Have a look at this one Ô..Ô
