Here is a most interesting shaker. I have not seen anything like it. Its not for the pattern nor the flowered decoration. Its for what is says," Topton Orphans Home".
Topton is a town located in Pennsylvania just south of Allentown. I pass the sign for it on my way to Adamstown where so many antique markets are located. I found this piece in Adamstown.
So one may wonder why this would be on a salt shaker? I find it hard to believe that its a piece you may buy as a souvenir, but anything could be possible. Or was it an example of items that the children may have painted as a money making venture for supporting the orphanage.
The Topton Orphanage was in existence from around 1897 to around 1922 when society changed on how to place these kids.
Its not unusual to find souvenir shakers or even some with advertising but this is most unusual and interesting!
