    Is this a 1700s or 1800s Meissen by Johann Joachim Chandler?

    I am under the assumption it is something of value when the antique dealer would not touch it and barely uttered...take it to auction... ?

    I got it for 10 bucks at a local thrift shop. :{

      Johann Joachim Kändler.

      The Meissen mark is crossed blue swords and is made only in Germany. The word "Japan" would not appear on a Meissen piece. To me, this looks like a tourist piece or something made for export.

      Also, I may not disagree on the tourist thing... It had Giftcraft Toronto import stickers on it that fell off upon inspection... yet it is NOT the giftcraft insignia....

      There is lore of importers accidentally picking up real pieces of antiquity, importing them, and then selling them as tourist pieces...

      I don't know enough here.

      This lore most likely does not apply here.

      Thanks Efesgirl... :) What does the mark mean?
    5. Efesgirl Efesgirl, 9 years ago
      An item that is imported for Gift Craft won't carry the Gift Craft insignia because it wasn't made by Gift Craft, thus the sticker. English ( *Japan* ) normally only appears on items meant to be exported.

      Do you still have the sticker? GiftCraft probably has factories dotted around the globe who make items specifically for export. This is a Noritake GiftCraft mark:

      Here is a list of Japanese marks, but I didn't see your particular mark listed here:

      The design is transfer printed, and is also very common on Limoges porcelain. Your Japan mark might stay a mystery. It's nothing like I have seen before, and I didn't find anything online.

      Hello everyone I just became a member. I actually have this exact same porcelain. I have the two water crafts as well as the pitcher. I don't see an actual answer some of the comments were ambiguous. So is this just tourist fun or could these actually be worth something? Anybody out there still interested in answering a 7-year-old question. These were my grandmothers and I'm sure that she got them from a trip to Toronto. Mine still actually have the giftcraft sticker on them still.
