    This seems to be used for a lubricator, or possibly to remove water from lines......this was also from the collection of glass plate negatives about 1925 or so.

      It looks as you said a air line oil lubricator to prevent air lines from rust. These can be set to drip per cycle.

      The petcock makes me think it might be a water/condensate separator.
