    I found this at an auction. It looks like it could be an ink well, but I really don't know. It's quite heavy for it's size, no markings

      Good find.
      I saw my first one of these just about a year ago at the local antique mall. The vendor there called them Snail inkwells. He has several, all made of cast iron, some single and some double snail.
