My Mum and Uncle (twins) were rocked in this chair as infants, which is whyI am guessing "circa 1930's". All I know is that a Quebec farmer carved this over the winter, and it has been in my family ever since. I believe it is maple wood. I don't know anything else about it, but would love to learn more if people know anything about this type of rocking chair.
I believe you will find that your chair is soft wood as opposed to being maple. The exception being the arms of the chair. Notice the differences in the openness of the grain of the woods. I can't see the stretchers or skids close enough to tell from the pictures but they may also be maple or possibly birch. The family probably intended to say this was hand built. The chair wasn't carved but certainly hand turned. Can you see any signs of pegs or nails or screws? Coming from Canada in those days I would expect to see pegs holding everything together. All three pictures are basically the same. A back view and side view and bottom view might tell a bit more. Under side of the arm was frequently a place where craftsmen marked their work. Did you look there?
Wow, great pointers, thanks fhrjr2! I took more photos but can't figure out how to post them yet. I will see if I can add them to the original post. There are no screws, or pegs, only a few discrete nails. No marks on the underside of the arms or on the back.
