Hard to believe this could end up in a thrift store, its an Edwardian 375/9k gold mesh coin purse/hand bag. The PE assay marks were entered into the London Assay office in 1904, the maker PE is Paul Ettlinger. This beauty weighs in at a whopping 168 grams !
Lucky you! It seems in perfect condition, a simple beautiful bag :-)
A great find!
Nice marks on that. There is a bit of Ettlinger around for comparison.
~ HAPPY NEW YEAR 2017 ~ Thanks for following me !! All the best to you and your family !!
Hi,
The purse bears London Assay Office IMPORT mark and Paul Ettlinger`s mark is sponsor`s mark. (4, Holborn Circus, later, 176, Regent Street, London). The purse was made elsewhere and imported to UK by PE who paid the duty and had it assayed.
DARING BURGLARY
London, April 1. 1912. Burglars entered, through a skylight, a shop adjoining Messrs. Ettlinger, jewellers, in Regent-street. They then cut huge holes in three walls into the jewelry establishment, apparently intending to remove a safe, but finally prized it open, and stole £13,000 worth of jewelry.
