My great uncle's pipe from South Africa, it has an amber stem, sterling silver band and a carved ladies head in meerschaum. H&E makers mark. The other marks are anchor, lion and the letter K. The length is 5 1/2 inches from the nose of the lady to the tip of the stem and 2 1/2 high. Has a protective leather case lined with blue velvet. Does anyone have any information? ie: age, country of origin, the craftsman, the carving subject etc?
The silver arks will be English (the lion) .... specifically from Birmingham (the anchor). The letter K will be in a particular style and only by seeing that style can you tell the year when it was hall marked. Refer to this list of letters:
http://www.925-1000.com/dlc_birmingham.html
It will be 1859, 1884 or 1909.
H&E will be a Birmingham firm but mind you they would only have added the silver strip.
