      Not made from shell casings. These are Japanese chokin. Chokin is an art of metal engraving dating to the 12th century. It was originally used to decorate the copper plates of samurai armor which were then laced together with silk or leather. The engravings were overlaid with pure gold, silver, and sometimes more copper. Your pair is a nice example of the art.

      No, they date from the last century, the art dates from the 12th century.
