I dug this up in a building's dirt floor. Most of the stuff was 1890s-1910s (oldest being an 1869 penny and the newest being stuff put in in the later 1900s as it was used until the 1990s.)
Technically, I dug three: This being the one with slight details on it; the other two being totally plain and smooth without the ridge.
There are no numbers, nor are there letters, on it.
It looks like someone tried painting it gold at one point, but the color isn't quite gold, and the paint is mostly gone.
What was it used for?

Yep, Mallaeble iron strap may be better term, depends how old you are and where you are from. I have had some of those vintage more decorative ones in original boxes.
You can still buy similar ones.
