I found this in a dark, dusty corner of a booth in an antique mall, priced dirt cheap, and was immediately entranced by it. Quite frankly, it is the most beautiful piece of art pottery I have ever had. The glaze and décor are just out-of-this-world beautiful, and I consider it to be one of the best pieces in my collection of studio art pottery.
I posted it on a Facebook page for identifying studio art pottery and eventually, to my surprise, the signature was identified as a Vietnamese ceramicist named Vu Thang. The Asian motifs should have been a clue that it was Asian, but I was sure it was either European or American, since the signature is in English. I had no idea there was such a rich history of art pottery in Vietnam.
I did some research on him and his work, and in my opinion, his work is greatly undervalued. I wish I had more space for photographs, its hard to capture how beautiful this thing is with just four photos. I couldn't believe how low his pieces sell for. Personally, from an artistic standpoint, I value this piece at ten times what I see his others selling for (although I didn't see any with such splendid decoration and glaze).
Anyway, hope all of you studio pottery collectors will enjoy this piece as much as I do. Happy holidays
I agree this is an exquisite piece, masterful.
I searched his work and he is such an artist. The other artists from Bat Trang seem pretty good too.
super quality!...
