i really have a thing for Catholic symbolism! i'm not at all religious, but i have no beef w/ it either [for the most part], but symbolism is sooo fascinating to me! this is a really cool image i've had for a long time. how is that for a wedding dress?!!

where the heck is the religous category?

      It probably dates to c.1954.

      Ave Regina Caelorum !!!

Queenship of Mary is a Marian feast day in the liturgical calendar of the Roman Catholic Church, created by Pope Pius XII.

On 11 October 1954, the Pontiff pronounced the new feast in his encyclical 'Ad caeli reginam'.

The feast was celebrated on May 31, the last day of the Marian month.

The initial ceremony for this feast involved the crowning of the Salus Populi Romani icon of the Virgin Mary in Rome by Pius XII as part of a procession in Rome. The feast is a logical follow-up to the Assumption and is now celebrated on the octave day of that feast.

In 1969, Pope Paul VI moved the feast day to August 22.

thank you aura, jscotto, and vetraio! kevin - you brought back a flood of memories to me! what a great christmas present. i remember the Ave Regina festivities very well now. the church my family attends for 5 generations is 'St. Marys' and my grandparents, parents and i [last generation before it closed] attended St. Mary's Grammar School. My grandparents and parents attended the high school too, but it had closed by the time i went [which is why i ended up at Geelong]. i hope you are having a wonderful Christmas Eve!
