I am looking for information on my 5 1/2 inch tall Hull ewer. I have found the marks on other ewers but all of them are 'colored' and as you can see mine is a creamy white. I think it would be considered as high gloss glaze I would like to know when it was made and its rarity. I received the ewer as a Christmas gift, my gifter had no information. She bought it at a local antiques store and they did not have any info either. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

It was probably a blank to be painted by a housewife to be fired either at a local potter or sent back to Hull for firing. There used to be an entire cottage industry of this type. Kind of like an old fashioned 'Color Me Mine' deal!

1952. Ewer, W3-5-1/2. They had several types of flowers on them. It looks to me like some people did paint them on their own - not all are painted well! Your's looks like a poinsettia maybe? Maybe it was Florist Ware?

Wow! Thanks Celiene! I had no idea that Hull offered blanks to be painted. That would explain the tiny R etched into the bottom over the dash! I didn't include that in the original description because I just noticed it! I believe it might be the Woodland pattern because of the cluster of grapes? coming off the leaf at the bottom and top.

Some of the potteries like beswick offered a lot of their vases in a white shades along with various colors. Some of their potteries were offered in a dull glaze and some also offered in a high gloss, others of the same line were painted and gilded also and not sure if Hull did the same various finishes. I would go to the library and see if there are any books on Hull pottery there. I know they made a number of hull books. The library could also possibly order from affiliate libraries.

I have seen a lot of potteries like yours that had a matt or gloss finish. Both were finishes and not offered as a " paint your own. "
