Here are more examples of the great engraving that printers from long ago did for railroad stocks and bonds. The image of Grand Central Terminal appears on a 1913 New York Central mortgage bond. This is the year that the Current Grand Central Terminal opened. The image of Pennsylvania Station, NY appears on a PRR mortgage bond from 1918. The beautiful steam locomotive appears on an 1883 stock certificate from the Peoria, Decatur & Evansville Railway Company. This company existed from 1880 until 1900, when it became part of the Illinois Central Railroad. Modern day companies rarely issue stock certificates anymore. Everything is electronic now. The old stock certificates were true works of art.
And from what has been revealed lately, many were worthless later. Change the name & dodge the debts ! LOL!!
In Response to blunderbuss2, it is true that many railroad stocks became worthless. I have a certificate from the Delhi & Hudson River. It was supposed to run from Delhi, NY to the Hudson River. In the late 1880's the railroad sold stock for the proposed new line. An annual report (I forget the year) showed the company assets at $750,000 (A LOT of money back then). The assets were ALL cash. No property, equipment, structures. The following year the "railroad" was gone---and so was everyone's money.
You sure did get around Brunswick !
I've been known to travel around a bit. They wanted to tag me so my migration routes could be studied in the 70's - 80's.
