Op shop find with no markings, but very old

I have no idea of the history of this dear old vase but I loved it as soon as I spotted in in an op shop in New Zealand. It has a very unusual sort of smell to it very earthy. Definitely Oriental and hand painted because you can see every stroke under a jeweller's loupe and the black paint appears thicker than the other colours. Possibly Japanese?

I don't know what the numbers represent, but my imagination? picked out what looked to be Oriental characters impressed in the edge of the base, although the marks take on a different appearance altogether according to the view angle. Could be just the pottery.
