California glass comes in a great variety of colors, but one must be careful about altered pieces as there are many out there. Based on the glass chemical composition they began as yellow, but when exposed to natural UV radiation from the sun, they would turn to varying shades of purple. Some yellows can still be found, whether unused stock or the insulator was used in an area where it wasn't pounded by the sun. A way to unnaturally reverse this process is to use heat, returning it back to a yellow color....if you are wondering why someone would do this, it is because yellows are more valuable, imagine that. These California's can be a tough call...takes a California specialist...and a did definitive call may still not be reached. I have my suspicions about this one bc it appears that the dome has been popped and re-glued...a potential tell tale sign it has been heated. Either way, a neat piece...came in a large group of insulators I picked up so it was just a bonus...prob would not have gone for just this piece alone. Enjoy!
