Two years ago, I posted a hand held rope maker. It had a lot of interest, so, when I found some other rope makers that I had stashed away and even forgot where I stashed them, I thought that I would list them also.
Photo #1 shows a three hook rope maker with the original wrench (the wrench is needed to twist the rope). This model hooked over the corral fence via the three legs. A farm rope could be twisted right on the spot wherever a fence and a bale of twine was available.
Photo #2 shows a four hook rope maker that bolted to a bench or table and a strong four twined rope could be made.
Photos #3 & #4 show a more common three hooked rope maker called a New Era rope maker. It also is bolted to a table while using. The New Era used a rope wrench that was very similar to one shown in photo #1.
These wrenches are harder to locate then the rope maker themselves.
Twisted rope can be easily made out of almost any material. I have twisted rope out of "Saran Wrap". It was strong enough to tow an automobile. You just have to pop the little air bubbles that form as you twist the wrap.
I know that I have another larger rope maker stashed somewhere called a Wonder four hooked model. If I find it , I'll post it.
These rope maker were all from the 20's and 30's

I saw a rope maker at Mystic Connecticut back in 1959 that looked just like yours. It was bigger though and was use to make 3 inch 'hawsers'.

It most likely was used for maritime application. They are used to make larger and heaver lines. These rope makers that I have shown were modtly used by farmers and pioneer settlers. They needed rope for their daily chores, but not the strength and mass like they needed for the ships spar.
Thanks seeker40, for your interest and nice comments.
