    I discovered this surveying transit in a local junk store. I am hoping that someone can help me to date this. I also understand that the colors on the stand may signify something (?)

      I can't help you but I have to agree with fortapache, it's a neat piece of kit

      From what I remember these were made any where from late 1950's to late 1970's. When I started surveying in the 70's these were still being used. As far as the coloring of the leg's was for safety as well as to be seen from longer distance's. Hope this helps you in your search.
