This was a Christmas present this year. And what a gift it was. A rare redware pipkin. These are usually found broken if found at all. The hollow handle was very easily broken. And these were used for some heavy duty cooking. A rare piece that I am grateful to have.
I see the redware category is under "Folk Art". I would have to argue that not all primitives are considered Folk Art. I would be much more comfortable with an Early American, Country Primitives, or Primitive header. Most collectors would agree that this is not folk art.

Was wooden piece used in the "hollow handle"?

I am not sure blunder. Perhaps...I do know that there probably was a top to this piece. But I am happy the way it is.

If there was a wooden handle inserted in the "hollow handle", that would explain why so many have that part broken.

Yeah that is true...I am not sure though, I figured it was hollow so that it wasn't so hot to handle when it was cooking in the hearth.
