Not sure about what this is....but I do know it is awesome. Got it from a nice guy who didn't know what it was either. Any guesses? The whole thing is carved, the handle and the entire inside was chiseled out through that small slit. Amazing.
Maybe sets in a cradle from the end trunnions & used as a percussion musical instrument ? Ah, guess that sounds feeble, but the best I can come up with at the moment. I'm trapped on a mountain above Red Hook & out of beer !!
It's a drum. I'm with BLUNDERBUSS !!!
I tend to agree with bb2 . He should know, living in the islands where percussion instruments make up a good portion of island musical instruments.
really....you think so...crazy!
Homemade instruments are made from bamboo for instance. Of course there would be diff. sized for diff. tones. Same principle as a xylophone or marimba. I would be able to think plainer if I could get some beer up this mountain!!
blunder, are you really stuck on a mountain.....and why?

tallcakes...well done! to all, thank you a true team effort....with me not being part of the team of course.
so could this one be a tourist item...or an actual New Guinea drum?
this one is so plain, the other are rich in decoration.
I'm guessing that without provenance it may be hard to attribute; generally looks similar to this one:

WOW! Y'all believed my BS & it actually turned out right !! LMAO !! Basically, I guessed on memory & observations & short on the memory part. Yes, BHock, I'm stuck on a hill top in St. Thomas with no transportation & yes, there is a woman involved. Sometimes my imagination is on low ebb & I have to rely on a female to create these situations. LOL!! (GOT BEER TODAY!!!)
blunder, you are a comic genius, it is true. Now....you are stuck on top of a mountain with a woman, CW, and a case of beer.....sounds like heaven.
You missed a point BHock. We traded houses & she is in my house & not here. Her boyfriend is due here Wed.. Any good opening lines I can use are welcome !! LOL!!
