Copper Haystack Measures Pitchers "Madras Excise"

I have two haystack measures here. I've done some research on them but only found very little applicable knowledge. One measures a gallon and the other measure a pint I think. What I'm wondering is what the labels on the front of them mean. They both say "Madras Excise - Gallon Makers - T.K.N. & Co." I cannot find ANYTHING pertaining to any of those words. I'm assuming that they are Indian and date from sometime during the British colonization. Can anyone tell me any more information?
