This incredible pair of vases were designed for the high-end retailer Bakalowits & Söhne by the noted Austrian architect Hubert Gessner (1871-1943) while he was studying with Otto Wagner at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He designed seven glass forms, all for Bakalowits and executed by Loetz. These two are over 17" tall (44 cm), and EACH one weighs about 5 lbs!

The two decors represented here are Luna Optisch, which is an Olympia ground with a spreading blue interior casing, and Syrius Optisch, also an Olympia ground, but with spreading pinkish violet inner casing. Both decors were made exclusively for Bakalowits & Söhne.

The production number for both vases is Com. 85/4023. A vase identical to the Luna is shown in Loetz Bohemian Glass 1880-1940 (Cantz), p. 173, plate 139. I was extremely fortunate to find them and cross two decors off my list at once!

It was fortuitous - the seller said that they were from an estate where they had been in the family from the beginning. Brand new to the market.
