This is made of, I'm assuming, pewter. I've searched for Peoria Plating Works and found no other examples of their work. Anyone have an idea of its age or any information on the company itself? I'm also wondering what style this is. It's very interesting with its claw feet and bumpy handle. Also, what do you think the lift colored rings in the handle are made of?

The company is long gone. They are listed in this 1896 Peoria Business Directory. Their address was 104 S. Madison Avenue, Peoria.

Your pot is very decorative !
I think the insulators rings are made of horn :-)
    3. Efesgirl Efesgirl, 9 years ago
The rings are probably ivory. They keep the handle from becoming hot. No idea how long the company was in business, but that pot looks to be +/- 1840s to me. The hand made designs are beautiful.

Could be horn. Could be marine ivory.

That's so cool. What about it makes you think it might be circa 1840's?
    6. Efesgirl Efesgirl, 9 years ago
The design looks to be 1840s to maybe 1860s. Around 1850-1860 some of the designs started to get really wacky and ornate. Hard to say because I don't know the history of the company.

Here is one that is similar, possibly dating from the 1860s:

Oh neat! I see many similarities - especially in the handle. Thanks for all your help.

      "Peoria Plating Works

      - These are the only plating works in the city, and were established in the latter part of 1878. They are located at 402 South Adams Street, and are under the management of J. S. DUNLAP. The enterprise is a local one, and bids fair soon to become one of considerable importance. All kinds of silver plated goods are manufactured, and they also do electrotyping in gold, nickel, bronze, etc. The works have a capacity of 25 ounces per hours, and a dynamo electric machine is used in the depositing room. Two floors are occupied and nine workmen are presently employed. The business last year amounted to about $5,000 and is increasing rapidly, has in fact doubled every six months since the start. A stock of about $3,000 is carried, and three traveling agents employed constantly. Considerable replating is done, and any pattern in flat or hollow ware can be duplicated. At present rate of business the works are turning out fifty full tea sets a year, besides hundreds of knives, forks, spoons and other small articles. Their trade is almost all in Illinois, with occasional and increasing orders from adjoining States.
