This sweet embroidery of two Chinese boys playing with firecrackers is on silk that I think is lined with cotton, because it is a bit 'puffy', not completely flat. It is embroidered in silk threads. But what is this type of embroidery called? It's like little knots or punched embroidery? Maybe if someone knows the type of embroidery, I can date it.

The frame is original, black lacquered wood. Measures 12 inches across. I've had this for years!

There are also the TEENIEST, TINIEST of stitches outling them, as well as in lapels and other parts of their clothes.

I'd just like to know what to call that type of Embroidery! Would Bonham's know that? Should I change the primary category to Embroidery?

From the photo I think it is a knot or seed stitch of some form. The Chinese have a variety of them and some are very intricate. This is more likely to be a simple Pekin stitch.

      I love the boys!

Hi Celiene, I think Racer is on the track with Peking knot, or forbidden stich, but seems to be tiniest on your piece.
I think the decor is a combination of different stitches as encountered on what is called needle painting.
And... I love your boys too!

I've had them at least 20 years, and I bought at Estate sale. They still have the original paper on the back. They have never been out of the frame. And thank you for the information! I could not for the life of me think of what these stitches are called!

They are going up on the bay just in time for Chinese New Years - Year of the Monkey this year!

I don't think this is ancient - But I do believe it is from early mid- 20th century.

Sorry - it's on it's way to the new owner. I only had one - and the back was just covered with a piece of paper.

Rucklcaglass - Oh - I was using the pronoun 'They' - I was talking about the Boys! That IS confusing!
