    Hi

I found this pot years ago on a secondhand market in the Netherlands and uptill now I really dont know where it was used for or how old it might be. The pot is made out of clay(heavy) colour of clay is red. Pot 30 cm high.No inscriptions. The pot has an iron hold, oxidated.

    Anyone?
    :)

What is that bit on the top supposed to be? I live now more than 25 years in the Netherlands and have never seen such a thing. It might be something left over from the Romans.

Hi, the top suppose to be a lit, it has got a little hole in it, maybe in the past it was attached to the pot. I can not find any square pots like this, from roman period, really have no idea where it comes from.I keep searching:)

Thanks for comments . I had 2 answers from 2 different specialists. One of them said it could be an old amphora , like the ones they found in the potteryholes in Knossos, Crete.in times of King Minos. The holes are square where they kept the pottery, but no square pottery to be found, so I have big doubts with this answer. The other specialist said its not Roman, but a few hundred years old for sure, but couldnt tell anything about the form and where it could have been used for. Still a mystery to me. Anyone? :)
